Thanks, TP.  It had been so long, I had forgotten how to upload as a banner.

The sick part is that I actually HAVE one of these in my house, but it's in chrome.   Very 'mid-century'.

Anybody else noticed that suddenly there are hundreds of up votes for top banners at seeming random?

I did. I haven't asked Square or Choad about it yet, but assumed there was a good reason for it.

That recent activity is even more pronounced on my local site. I'm guessing a bot, but to what purpose, I haven't a clue.

Hmm, hadn't really noticed that before, but I see what you mean.  It's not Google, since voting is done via POST links that it and other legitimate spiders won't follow.  My speculation would be bots trying to attack the server by submitting the first form on each page with bogus data, but that's just a guess.  If you think it's an issue I can try to turn on logging for these requests.

It's always nice to know where bot attacks are coming from. Besides, I'm supposed to be the Banner Czar. If I can't give all my own banners 100 up votes I don't see why some greasy little hacker should.

Unfortunately I don't know as it would tell us much - the traffic has to be coming from hundreds of IP addresses.  The current anti-ballot-stuffing code only lets an IP vote once on a particular banner.  Will take a look at what I can whip up over the weekend.

OK, I added some code to log if attack attempts are being made via the banner voting form.  So far (~30 minutes), that doesn't seem to be the case - only valid votes are being submitted.

After some time passes, I may be able to do some analysis of the IP addresses they're coming from to see if there's any pattern.

Offline

#4183 2013-05-31 02:49:47

The results seem to be: robots are going to the "Register" or "Profile" pages and trying to create an account by submitting the first form that appears on the page.  These make up 99% of recent votes.  They don't seem to be attempting to hack the site (other than creating spam accounts).

I have changed things so that any votes coming from those pages will not be counted.  The effect should be minimal on legitimate users, since they don't spend much time there.  However, if you try to vote on a banner while on one of those pages, you'll see a notice that it was not counted.

In addition, I have modified the code so that the "pro" vote form doesn't always come first - it and the "con" vote form now appear in random order.  This should cause any robot votes to at least balance each other out.

Let me know if you notice anything that seems broken as a result of the changes.

The question now becomes: should there be a Great Reset?  Right now the vote totals are pretty useless, and bumping them all back to zero would at least give the possibility that they might reflect what people think.  Discuss.

You should look at the deactivated banners anyway, because one of your predecessors turned off many of the early banners for reasons unrelated to their merit.

What part of "don't completely suck" do you not understand? You're absolutely right though, there are many good banners that should still be displayed. After the reset I'll wade through the whole swamp again  and turn the good ones back on. Those who ignore history are doomed to have politics like Phreddy's.

OK, hearing no opposition, the 566 header images that are currently set to be displayed (either to registered users only, or to guests also) have had their votes reset to zero.  I figured the rest haven't been affected by the recent wave of robot votes.

The 816 banners that have been "deleted" aren't really gone; they've just been set not to show up in the list when you click the "Banners" link.  You can view all 1,409 banners from the beginning of High Street by going here.

I suppose you can make your case for resurrecting some of these to the Banner Czar; he will have to give me a list as it requires manually fiddling with the database.

Vote away!

Attention Banner Czar!

Here are some of mine that have been deleted, most of them because of squabbles with a previous Banner Czar.  Look them over and see if you deem any of them worthy of restoration.  If I remember correctly, banners don't show up in the voting statistics until somebody votes yea or nay on them, so a few of them may be active but not showing in the voting statistics because of the reset.  I saw a number of deleted banners by other people that are awesome; lack of merit wasn't always the reason banners were deleted.

There are some fine banners there, fnord, and I can't deny that many deserve to been seen. However, as a general rule I believe the fewer turds at the top of the page, the better. I'm People's Commissioner Tirebiter now, and nobody's sweetheart *smack!*

Yes.  Personal considerations entered into Pale's decisions when he was deciding which banners to delete.  He also had some strange idea that work produced by the denizens of this place should meet some ambiguous standards of his.

This "strange idea" was 100% correct; as originally conceived, it was left entirely to the Banner Czar's judgement which ones to keep.  The voting system was not developed until later.  While there were occasional hissy fits (the technical effects of which I reversed when they occurred) and certainly a lack of detached objectivity, overall he took more abuse than he deserved.  There were (and IMO, still are) worse actors in our midst.

This does not mention seemly firing for effect 15, 20 or more times in a row, repeatedly.

You think this is being a drama queen?  Sweetie Darling, there have been many Oscar-worthy performances where I've played the role of Drama Queen (the evidence is in the archives if you care to look for it), but my posts on this thread the last few days wouldn't be noticed by Serious Drama Queens.
