Great read, but not surprising to any cold warriors assigned to the German bases. Germany's military was just the thin glove over the American fist, but that all changed with the European Union and their resentment of the trillions of dollars of America's investment in their security.

It's like the kid who wants a Porsche for a gift when he can't afford to put gas in it.

One can certainly argue with the wisdom of the US investing so much in European defense, but I don't think there can be any doubt whatsoever that we did so for selfish reasons. And I doubt that any resentment of America's posture in Germany (or Europe overall) was based on the money we spent on their defense; it was based on the various forms of extortion which the "gifts" made inevitable, including expectations of European support for things like the Vietnam War, the Iraq invasion which destabilized the Middle East, and unwavering support of Israel even when Israel was clearly in the wrong.
